CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP)- Kaayla Chones scored 17 of her game-high 23 points in the second half to help North Carolina State end No. 12 North Carolina's 18-game home winning streak with a 62-54 upset Sunday.
Chones, a 6-foot-3 senior, also had a team-high 13 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season and 26th of her career. Her two baskets in the last 90 seconds gave N.C. State some breathing room after North Carolina cut the margin to 55-54 with 1:46 to play.
It was N.C. State's fifth win in its last six games and its first over its Atlantic Coast Conference rival since a 66-63 decision in Chapel Hill on Jan. 10, 2002.
Marquetta Dickens added 14 and Nana Rivers 12 for N.C. State (13-11, 5-6 ACC). Freshman Camille Little led North Carolina with 13 points and 13 rebounds, her sixth double-double. La'Tangela Atkinson had 12 points and Leah Metcalf 10 for the Tar Heels.
North Carolina made just 19 of 60 field-goal attempts (31.7 percent) and was outrebounded 46-39 by the Wolfpack.
The Tar Heels, after closing to within one point down the stretch, missed their last three shots and committed turn overs on two of their remaining three possessions.
Rivers hit two free throws and Dickens one in the final 13 seconds to secure the win. North Carolina (18-4, 8-3 ACC) led 29-25 at the half and were up 44-40 after a layup by Ivory Latta with 11:18 to play.
N.C. State then went on a 13-0 run in a four-minute span to seize the lead and never let it go. Dickens capped the decisive run with a 3-pointer that gave N.C. State a 53-44 lead with 6:46 to play. North Carolina answered with an 8-0 run, keyed by four points from Atkinson. Her two free throws with 1:46 to play cut N.C. State's lead to 55-54.
After laying in one basket with 1:29 remaining, Chones finished off North Carolina by stealing a pass near the Tar Heels bench and sprinting in untouched for a layup that pushed the margin to 59-54.
