
Gymnastics Posts a 195.925 in Hearts Invite

Raleigh, N.C. - Returning from a five-meet road trip, the NC State gymnastics team posted its highest score of the season, and 10th best in school history, in notching a 195.925 in the annual Hearts Invitational held in Reynolds Coliseum. The Wolfpack (8-8) finished second in the meet to conference rival No. 23 North Carolina (196.725). William & Mary finished third with a 192.775, and James Madison was fourth with a 191.100. NC State recorded its highest scores of the season on both bars and floor, and the 49.500 on floor ranks third all-time in school history.
The Wolfpack started the night out on vault, and came away with a team score of 48.900, counting no score less then a 9.7. Freshman Rachel Katz turned in a career-best score of 9.9 and won her first ever title on vault. Senior Molly Pennington and sophomore Kylah Bachman each scored a 9.775 and tied for fifth place. Senior Cheryl Potacco notched a 9.75 for eighth place, while fellow senior Marlyn Madey competed on vault for the first time in her career and scored a 9.7 for 12th place.
On bars, NC State a season-best score of 49.200 with four of its five counting scores 9.8 or higher. Madey led the way for the Wolfpack with a season-best score of 9.9 to win her first bars title of the year. Bachman was close behind in third with her 9.85. Katz had another strong showing with a 9.825 for seventh place, and junior Andrea Petrocelli notched the same score of 9.825. Rounding out the scoring was Potacco with a 9.8 for a ninth place showing.
NC State faltered on beam, having to count a fall, and scored a 48.325. Junior Cori Goldstein was the top scorer for the Wolfpack, as she tallied a 9.875 to finish second. Jones was not far behind with her 9.825 for fifth place. Madey scored a 9.75 for ninth place, and fellow senior Alison Bundy notched a 9.7 for 13th.
NC State finished the meet extremely strong on floor with a 49.500, the third highest floor score in school history. The Pack counted four scores of at least 9.9. Goldstein was once again the Pack's top finisher, scoring a season-best 9.925 for third place. A trio of NC state gymnasts followed her with 9.9 performances. Bundy, Bachman and Katz all tied for sixth place. Rounding out the scoring was Madey with her 9.875 for 11th place.
Having to make up for two NC State gymnasts out of the lineup, both Madey and Jones competed in the all-around for the first time in their careers. Madey scored a 39.225 for second place, tying the highest all-around score for NC State this year, while Jones finished with a score of 38.875 to take fifth. Also, Bachman returned to the all-around with a score of 38.700 to place sixth.
NC State will next return to the road, competing at North Carolina next weekend. The Wolfpack will then have three of the final four regular season meets at home, starting Friday, February 27, against George Washington.
