PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - The NC State men's golf team shot seven over par in the third and final round of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship at Sawgrass Country Club (par 72) Tuesday in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., to finish 11th in a talented 18-team field that inlcuded nine top-25 squads. Stephen Lewton led the Wolfpack in the final round with his second straight day of shooting par. The sophomore recorded his tournament-leading second eagle of the event . Fernando Mechereffe was NC State's top finisher overall, tying for 23rd place with a seven over par total.
Mechereffe went four over in the final round, but eagled hole 16 and birdied 10. Lewton eagled 14 and birdied two other holes. Jerry Richardson and Garry Hill, who both improved their scores each day, birdied four holes each, while Wesley Horne birdied 11 and 12.
South Carolina ran away with the victory, firing a four-under par score in the final round and finishing 27 strokes ahead of runner-ups Oklahoma State and Florida. Jason Hartwick from Texas was the individual medalist, carding a five-under par score of 67 in the third round to finish the tournament five under.
