Wolfpack Shoots Five Under To Charge Into Fourth Place

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - The NC State men's golf team caught fire Monday in the second round of the Puerto Rico Classic at the par-72, 6,782-yard Ocean Golf Course at the Westin Rio Mar Country Club in San Juan, Puerto Rico, shaving ten strokes off its first round score, shooting five under par and vaulting from ninth to fourth place, going into the final round. Jerry Richardson (Fr., Burlington, N.C.) led the way, carding a two-under score of 70 and the other three scoring members each shot 71.
Fernando Mechereffe matched his first round score of 71 and the other four Wolfpack golfers all improved in their second day. Richardson improved his score by six strokes and Stephen Lewton shaved seven shots from his Sunday total. Mechereffe sits in 12th place overall, five strokes off the leader and Wesley Horne is just six back after following his first round 72 with a 71 today.
A tournament that is recognized as one of the premier events of the collegiate season, the 18-team field features eight of the top 25 teams in the Golfweek Top-25 Poll.
Oklahoma took the team lead and is three strokes ahead of second place Florida, while Clemson's Matt Hendrix took the lead individually today with a 67 to go with his 70 from Sunday. The Puerto Rico Classic concludes tomorrow with the final round of 18 holes.
