NC State women's basketball will look to pick up its second multi-team event title this season when it travels to the Saint Peter's Classic, Dec. 29th and 30th. The Wolfpack, 8-2, will take on Mount Saint Mary's, 1-7, on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., before facing host St. Peters, 4-4, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. NC State will meet both teams for the first time.
The Wolfpack will look to finish the month of December with a 7-1 record when it travels to Jersey City, NJ. Heading into the two games, NC State is led by junior Tiffany Stansbury. The 6-3 center has a team-best 11.2 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per contest. Junior Billie McDowell moved into second place in the scoring ranks after her 16-point performance at George Washington. She is averaging 10.2 ppg. The team's third-highest scorer, sophomore Ashley Key (9.6 ppg), is 10-15 from the floor in the last two games and went 7-9 from the three-point line in that time as well. She now leads the team in three-point percentage at 35.3 percent. In those two games, Key also had two assists and four steals with just one turnover. As a team, NC State is sixth in the nation in scoring defense with just 49.1 point allowed. The Pack has started the season with its best record since the 2000-01 season.
It will be the first meeting between NC State and The Mount or Mountaineers of Mount Saint Mary's. MSM has lost its last four games and has just one win on the season at 1-7. The lone victory came against Towson, 64-57, on Nov. 28. That win broke a previous three-game losing streak. The Mount has two players averaging double figures. Sophomores LaToya Butler and Dita Krumberga are both scoring just over 10 points a contest. Junior guard Samira Rashid leads the team in assists with 38 total, or 4.75 per outing. Freshman guard Tiffany Green is close behind her with 32 total assists, or 4.0 apg. The Mount has played just two games at home this season, is 1-4 away and has lost one on neutral court.
The Wolfpack is 3-0 all-time versus the NEC, and is 1-0 on neutral court. It has been 14 years since NC State took on a NEC opponent. Two of those wins came in the 1990-91 season. The first contest was on Dec. 20, 1990 against Robert Morris. The Pack won, 97-48 in Raleigh. NC State then went on to defeat Central Connecticut, 110-74 in the Wildcat Invitational at Villanova on Dec. 28.
Saint Peter's recently ended a three-game winning streak after a loss to visiting DePaul, 86-61 on Dec. 21. The Peahens are 4-4 on the year with wins at Drexel, at Monmouth and versus Marist and Hartford. The squad is 2-2 at home and on the road. A core of four juniors, three of which are averaging double figures, lead Saint Peter's. At guard, Tiffany Jones leads the team with 14.6 points per game and 2.3 assists per game. At 5-11 Khalisha Lewis and 6-foot-2 center Elina Kalnina are both leading the team with seven rebounds a contest. Lewis is also second on the squad in scoring with 11.5 points per game. Guard Tyonna Vance is third in scoring with 11.1 ppg
NC State is 5-0 against the MAC and is 1-0 on neutral court. The last game against a MAC team was back on Dec. 29, 1989 against Fairfield. NC State won 85-70 in Raleigh.
The Mountaineers head coach Vanessa Blair Treadwell is in her seventh season as head coach and in that time has compiled an overall record of 88-90. Saint Peter's is led by first year head coach Stephanie DeWolfe. She took over the reigns when Peter Granelli retired last year after becoming the fourth coach in women's basketball division I history to record 600 wins at the same school. He preceded Robin Selvig of Montana and NC State head coach Kay Yow. Yow is 604-283 in 30 seasons at the helm and owns a 34-year record of 661-302.
NC State will finally get into conference action when it hosts Atlantic Coast Conference foe, Wake Forest, on Monday, Jan. 3, at 6 p.m. The ACC opener will be televised live on FOX Sports South. The Wolfpack is 49-6 all-time against the Demon Deacons and is 21-3 at home. The Deacs are 9-1 on the year. Four WFU players are averaging double figures, led by junior guard Cotelia Bond-Young's 15.8 ppg. Wake is led by first year head coach Mike Petersen.
