RALEIGH, N.C. - Sunday's Third Annual Women's Jimmy V Classic will not only be an opportunity for the Wolfpack to upset the No. 1 ranked team in the nation, Tennessee, but also a chance to celebrate life and participate in a function to raise money for cancer research.
The women's classic is in its third year thanks to NC State head coach Kay Yow and the Jimmy V Foundation. The Pack has participated in all three classics, all three of which have hosted nationally ranked Tennessee and Connecticut before. In each of the previous years NC State has been the underdog and will look to make this year's classic a good one with a first ever victory. In 2003, the Pack fell to No. 6 Connecticut, 78-50 and last year to No. 2 Texas, 69-56.
In 2004, the Pack will face No. 1 Tennessee, a team which was the 2004 NCAA Runner-up and this year boasts the nation's top recruiting class. NC State is 3-11 all-time versus the Lady Vols, but has won two of those games at home. The Pack is 2-3 at home.
Both NC State and Tennessee are coming off of season opener victories on Friday. UT began the year on the road at UT-Chattanooga and blasted UTC, 68-34. NC State hosted UNC Wilmington and won, 67-49. Tennessee's head coach Pat Summitt is 27 wins away from becoming NCAA's all-time winningest coach in history. She welcomes back seven letterwinners from the 2004 squad that went 31-4.
NC State junior Tiffany Stansbury led the way with her first career double double at the Division I level. The center posted 12 points and 16 rebounds, including 10 offensive boards. Junior guard Billie McDowell finished with a game-best 21 points and set new career records in points, field goals made (8) and three-pointers made (5). The Pack competed in one exhibition game, on Tuesday this week. NC State defeated EA Sports, 80-56. Stansbury led with an unofficial double double, 14 points, 12 rebounds. With the victory, Yow needs just three more to reach 600 for her 30 year career at NC State. When she reaches the mileston, the 34-year head coach will join three others who have done so, including Summitt. The others are Jody Conradt of Texas and the retired Peter Granelli of St. Peter's College.
After Sunday's game, NC State heads on the road to compete in the Paradise Jam, which will pit NC State and Nebraska on Friday, Nov. 26 at 6 p.m. EST, 7 p.m. AST. The Pack will then face Hampton or Louisville in either the championship or consolation game. If the Pack wins the first game, it will play at 6 p.m. EST, 7 p.m. AST on FOX Sports Net, Saturday Nov. 28. The consolation game is at 8:30 EST, 9:30 AST.
