Three players reached double figures, including a team-best 17 points from sophomore guard Ashley Key and a double-double from junior Tiffany Stansbury, 14 points and 12 rebounds, as NC State downed EA Sports 80-58 in exhibition action Tuesday, Nov. 16, at Reynolds Coliseum. Senior point guard Kendra Bell added 11 points in the effort. Courtney McDaniel led EA Sports with 20 points.
"For an exhibition game I feel that we played well," said NC State head coach Kay Yow. "We have new players on the inside and we are working hard to blend our game with the perimeter players. We will learn from each game to help us with the next."
NC State jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the first half, but allowed EA Sports to make a 10-to-2 run during a four minute stretch between the 17 and 13:40 marks. In fact, EA Sports held close until NC State stayed on top for good with a 29-19 lead with just over five and half minutes to go. Junior Tiffany McCollins sparked the NC State offensive surge when picked off a pass near midcourt and hit Key for the open jumper. Key recorded all of her 17 points in the first half, which included a 2-for-3 performance from the three-point line.
"I would like to think my performance in Greece rolled over into today's game," said Key. "I hope it continues."
Key tallied 61 total points in the Pack's four games in Rome, Italy and Athens, Greece this past May when the NC State program took a 10-day trip overseas. She led the Wolfpack in scoring three of those games.
Bell, the team's point guard and co-captain, followed with nine points and two steals as she worked at the one-spot with the four new faces on the Wolfpack squad.
" It's just different faces, that's about it," said Bell. "All of our players have been coming in and working hard, so its pretty much the same target, just different faces."
Bell hit Stansbury's target to help the junior college transfer record 14 second half points to lead the Pack to a 22-margin at game's end. Stansbury also grabbed nine boards to go along with three from the first half. Seven of her 12 total caroms were offensive, which helped NC State tally more offensive than defensive rebounds. The Pack collected 25 offensive rebounds and 22 defensive. NC State steadily crept away from EA Sports and finally reached the 20-point advantage with just over five minutes to go. Sophomore Sasha Reaves helped to Pack reach that point when she scored six points in just over a minute late in the period.
Also of note, junior Monica Pope and senior Darline Jasmin tallied four steals apiece to lead NC State and the game.
The Wolfpack opens the regular season with a 7 p.m. home game against UNC Wilmington on Friday, Nov. 19. NC State owns the all-time series, 1-0, with the last game being played back in 1981.
