RALEIGH, N.C. - With strong team showings at the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and District III Championships, the NC State cross country program has plenty of momentum going into the season-ending NCAA Championship meet. If the men's and women's team's need any more of a boost, placing seven runners onto the All-Southeast region team only proves that the cross country world is paying close attention to the Pack.
Winning their last two meets at the ACC and District III Championships, three runners from the men's team collected all-region honors for their major contributions to the team's success. Senior Andy Smith tops the list with a third-place overall finish at the district race. The award is another for Smith to add to his resume of accomplishments, which includes the 2000 ACC Freshman of the Year honor, 2003 ACC individual champion, four consecutive all-conference team selections and an All-America citation. Finishing one-tenth of a second behind Smith at the district meet, sophomore Bobby Mack also collected all-region honors. Wesley Smith picked up all-region honors of his own after crossing the finish line at the district race in 18th-place.
The women's team, who finished third overall at the ACC Championships, stepped up to claim a second-place finish at the District III Championships over this past weekend. Juniors Julia Lucas and Kristina Roth, who both finished first and second respectively for the Pack in both meets, were named to the All-Southeast Region team following their performances. In addition, senior Erin Swain also made the list, as did true freshman Angelina Blackmon. Swain finished 21st overall at the district meet, while Blackmon made a strong debut showing at the championships, placing 15th.
Coach Rollie Geiger will continue to prepare the team for the NCAA Championships, which will be held Monday, Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind.
