Men's Cross Country Finishes First at District III Championships

RALEIGH, N.C. - On Saturday, Nov. 13, the NC State men's cross country team ran to a first-place team finish in the 10,000 meter race at the District III Championships in Greenville, N.C. Collecting a total of 81 points, the Pack finished first for the second-straight meet, after earning their fourth consecutive ACC title at the conference championships in College Park, Md., on Oct. 30.
Senior Andy Smith led NC State in his final district race. The 2003 ACC individual champion ran to a third-place finish, crossing the finish line one-tenth of a second ahead of sophomore teammate Bobby Mack, who finished fourth overall. Sophomore Wesley Smith rounded out the Pack's top-20 finishers, coming in 18th overall. Freshman Gavin Coombs, recently named the 2004 ACC men's Freshman of the Year, finished 26th, while junior John Henderson placed 30th. 2002 ACC men's Freshman of the Year Bryce Ruiz finished the race 31st, while red shirt freshman Stephen Furst came in 54th.
ACC men's Coach of the Year Rollie Geiger will continue to prepare the team for the NCAA Championships, which will be held Monday, Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind.
