RALEIGH, N.C. - On Saturday, Sept. 25, seven members of the Wolfpack women's tennis team spent their day in a construction zone, rather than on a tennis court. Working at Roslayn Place, a Habitat subdivision located in Southeast Raleigh, the Pack players teamed up with Habitat for Humanity to help build a home for a local family in need. Lauren Barry, Kristin Lam, Elin Stahl Johansson and Nandita Chandrasekar worked on the shoes of room walls, while Taylor Parker and Allison Barry helped out with the porch. In the meantime, Julia Roach managed the chainsaw.
"Community service is very important to everyone involved in this program," said head coach Hans Olsen. "We're all very fortunate to be in a position where we are able to help out like this and we are proud to be involved with an organization as great as Habitat for Humanity. Our girls really enjoyed working with them and I think that says a lot about their character and values."
"It feels good to give back to the community," said Lam. "Especially after we have been given so much."
Starting this past weekend, Lam and junior Barbara Orlay began competing at the ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif. In addition to that tournament, members of the team will be competing in at least four other events during the month of October. The Pack will take to New York City to compete in the USTA National Invitational Saturday, Oct. 9 through Monday, Oct. 11. The tournament will be held exactly one month after the U.S. Open and will take place on the same courts as the pro circuit event. Beginning Friday Oct. 15, the Pack will play host to 21 schools as they open up the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center to host the Residence Inn Wolfpack Fall Invitational.
