CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - NC State men's tennis team had a successful run in the UNC Invitational this weekend, with two freshman completing play in action on Sunday. Mason Schermerhorn took third place of the singles B draw, while Nick Cavaday fell in a three-set match in the final of the singles draw A.
Schermerhorn won a tight first set 7-5, before battling to a 3-3 score in the second set. The match was suspended with Schemerhorn claiming third place when Stuart Lynas of Charlotte withdrew.
Cavaday won the first set 6-4 over ITA No. 113 Raian Luchici, but never quite got into a rhythm on the afternoon, with the talented freshman struggling with his serve and committing a high number of unforced errors. He stayed in the second set before falling 6-2, and couldn't hold on in the third set after falling in a hole 4-1. Cavaday rallied to pull within 4-3, but lost the final two games for the final 6-3 tally.
All-ACC standout Conor Taylor, the nation's No. 36 player, will travel to the ITA All-American event from Oct. 2-10. Taylor, who posted a 5-3 mark at No. 1 singles in his first season of ACC play, posted a 1-2 record as the No. 1 seed in the Baylor Invitational last weekend in his only action of the fall season.
