GREENSBORO, N.C. - NC State women's basketball was selected to finish seventh of the 11-member Atlantic Coast Conference preseason rankings. The Pack, which advanced to its 17th NCAA Tournament last season, has 10 returners and two starters returning to the lineup this season. Joining them are two freshmen and two junior college transfers, including the National Junior College Player of the Year, Tiffany Stansbury. Co-captains, senior Kendra Bell and junior Rachel Stockdale, return as the Wolfpack's two starters. Sophomore Marquetta Dickens returns as the team's leading scorer.
NC State opens its 2004-05 slate with a home game against UNC Wilmington Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum. The Wolfpack will then host the Third Annual Women's Jimmy Classic and will face Tennessee at 5 p.m., on Sunday, Nov. 21.
North Carolina, the recipient of 20 of 40 first-place votes, was selected as the top preseason pick, as determined by a vote of the media present at the 2004 ACC Women's Basketball Media Day at the Grandover Resort.
The Duke Blue Devils, who received 18 first-place votes, followed the Tar Heels in the balloting, while the Maryland Terrapins, with two first-place votes, finished third. ACC newcomers Miami and Virginia Tech were selected to finish in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Virginia was sixth, followed in the seventh slot by the NC State Wolfpack. Clemson and Florida State tied for eighth place, while Georgia Tech and Wake Forest filled the 10th and 11th spots, respectively.
