With heavy early morning rains and a touch of thunder, day one at the Residence Inn North Wolfpack Invitational didn't appear to be shaping up the way that coach Hans Olsen and the NC State women's tennis team had envisioned. Once the competition began, however, the Pack started running like a well-oiled machine.
The red and white collected five wins in doubles action to get the day started. In Flight A1, Barbara Orlay and Virginia Romero rolled to victory over UNC Greensboro's Lisa Suggs and Erica Zabkar, 8-3. Julia Roach and Kristin Lam made an early statement with a shutout win over Jackson and Madyun from North Carolina A & T in Flight A2, 8-0.
In Flight B1, Agustina Arechavaleta and Elin Stahl Johannson continued the trend with another shutout victory over Charleston Southern's Heard/Bair team. With a solid overall performance, Taylor Parker and Lauren Barry collected a win of their own over West Point's Christine Bicksler and Marissa Limsiaco, 8-3, in Flight B2. In Flight B3, Allison Barry sealed another doubles victory for the Pack, even though her teammate wasn't wearing similar colors. Paired with Winthrop's Marisa Bekmetova, the two beat out Ashley Harris and Kristin Ikard from Western Carolina, 8-2.
In the singles rounds, NC State continued to dominate at home, notching six match wins. Barbara Orlay defeated Marissa Limsiaco of Army in two sets, 6-3, 6-1. Continuing to dominate in fall action, Elin Stahl Johannson quickly earned her first singles victory of the weekend, winning over Western Carolina's Katherine Ptak, 6-0, 6-0. Carmen Torres collected a shut out of her own Katerine Jackson from North Carolina A & T, 6-0, 6-0. Julia Roach battled from behind to defeat Bekmetova of Winthrop, 5-7, 6-0, 7-6, 10-7. Danielle Stadelmann put up a hard fight, eventually wearing down Martyna Hanusz of Liberty, 7-6(6), 6-1. Virginia Romero advanced via default and Taylor Parker advanced due to a bye in the first round.
"We've been very impressed at the level of talent that all of the competing schools are brining in for this tournament," said assistant coach Mait DuBois. "Equally impressive is the fact that our team has risen above the challenge for a very dominant first day."
Day two of the Residence Inn North Wolfpack Invitational will kick off with doubles competition on Saturday, Oct. 16, at 8:00 a.m.
