Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State track and field teams will open the 2004 campaign by traveling to North Carolina this Saturday and competing in the Carolina Big 12 Meet. NC State will be one of 12 in-state schools competing in Chapel Hill, the first meet for most teams this season.
The NC State men's team will send over Mitchell Pope. Pope redshirted last season with the Wolfpack, and this will be his first collegiate meet.
The NC State women's team will send athletes to compete in the sprints and in the throws. In the sprints, the duo of Felicia Fant and Ebony Foster will compete. Fant will run in the 60 meters, while Foster will compete in the 60 meter hurdles. Fant won both the 100 and 200 meters at the ACC Outdoor Championships last year, and Foster is the school record holder in the 60 meter hurdles. Nasheena Quick will also run in the 60 meters and 60 hurdles. Making their college debuts will be freshmen Courtney Patterson and Joya Rodgers.
In the field events, Kelly Smoke will compete in the shot put and weight throw, and Brie Ward will compete in the weight throw. Smoke won All-ACC honors during the indoor season last year, and Ward redshirted her freshman campaign.
