Wolfpack Women Get ACC Win Over FSU, 79-64

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - NC State won its first ACC contest of the season in convincing fashion with a 79-64 win over Florida State Monday afternoon in ACC action at the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center. FSU fell to 10-7 overall and 3-3 in ACC play while the Wolfpack improved to 9-10 and 1-5 in league action.
"NC State came out and shot the ball," FSU head coach Sue Semrau said. "To only miss four shots in the second half, I don't think I've ever seen anything like that. We tried to mix it up on them a couple of times, but we couldn't find an answer. I thought on the offensive end, we were a little tentative. We probably didn't attack the post the way we needed to."
The Wolfpack scored first and led the first seven minutes of the half. FSU trailed 8-4 at the 16:40 mark when Tasheika Allen went to work. She drained a three-pointer that started a 9-2 Seminole run, giving Florida State a 13-10 lead. Then it was NC State's turn. Thanks to two three-pointers by Rachel Stockdale, the Wolfpack ran off eight unanswered points and took the largest lead of the game, for either team, at 20-13 with 8:19 left in the half. Stockdale ended the game 5-6 from behind the arc, setting a career-high for three pointers made. But Seminole senior Trinetta Moore wouldn't have it. Having already scored four points off of the bench, Moore hit three straight layups and scored eight of FSU's next 10 points as the Seminoles outscored NC State 14-2 over the next six minutes of the game. The Tribe led 27-22 with 1:47 left and had a 29-26 halftime lead. Moore led all scorers with 12 points as FSU shot 41 percent for the half. NC State shot 40 percent and was led by Kaayla Chones' eight points.
The second half was neck-and-neck for the first nine minutes. Moore hit a layup at the 10:39 mark to pull FSU within one at 45-44 but then Chones and Stockdale did what they'd done all day and combined for the next six points. Chones was fouled on a layup and hit the free throw for the three-point play while Stockdale hit one of her five three-pointers. The Seminoles struggled offensively, while the Wolfpack couldn't miss - from anywhere. NC State scored the next six straight, four from the charity stripe, and had its largest lead at 11 points. The closest FSU got was six points the rest of the way. NC State's last nine points were from the free throw line. After scoring 26 points in the first half, NC State more than doubled that in the second half, scoring 53 points after intermission by knocking in 79 percent (15-19) of its field goal attempts.
Led by Chones' 23 points and nine rebounds, the Wolfpack shot 57 percent in the game. Kendra Bell had 18 points and five assists while playing a game high 39 minutes while Stockdale finished with 15 points - all from three-point range. NC State hit 9-15 attempts from behind the arc for the game, a stellar 60%. Where the Wolfpack really shined was from the charity stripe, hitting 18-22 (82%) in the second half and 74% for the game.
