Cross Country Sweeps Adidas/Tennessee Invitational

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Rollie Geiger's cross country squads opened the season Friday evening by sweeping the Adidas/Tennessee Invitational. The women's team won the 5K event by a nine-point margin over No. 25 Wisconisn and Tennessee. The squad was led by two-time All-American Kristin Price, who took the individual crown with a fast time of 17:15.37, nearly 20 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. The men, who went head-to-head with the Volunteers, won by 14 points. Wolfpack runner Ricky Brookshire won the race by finishing the 8K course with a time of 25:35.32.
The women's squad placed all five scoring runners in the top 10 of the field, taking fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth. Wisconsin (39) was second and Tennessee (60) took third. Renee Gunning, Lucinda Hull and Josianne Lauber finished packed together, respectively, crossing the finish line within five seconds of one another. Megan Coombs, an All-American in 2001, finished ninth. Kara Price, twin sister of Kristin, ran in her first cross country race with the Pack, finished 13th, and Abigail Nelkie finished 15th.
Other runners competing included Amy Arnold (16th), Ginger Wheeler (20th), Michelle Popple (23rd) and Janelle Vadnais (25th).
For the men, Devin Swann and Allen Bader scored second and third. David Christian, Matt Kassouf and John Henderson also finished in the top 10 to give the Pack six of the top 10 scorers in the field.
Redshirt-freshmen Colin Cronin and Lance Hall finished 16th and 18th.
The Wolfapck harriers will return to the course next Saturday for the Raleigh Invitational, to be held at the University Club on Hillsborough Street. The men's 8K will begin at 8:30 a.m., with the women's 5K to follow at 9:10 a.m.
