Raleigh, N.C. - NC State received a huge effort in the number three spot from senior Loni Worsley in its 6-1 loss to the Duke Blue Devils. Worsley picked up the lone win for the Wolfpack against No. 37 Saras Arasa Wednesday afternoon in NC State's first conference match of the season. The loss drops the Pack to 3-3 overall, while No. 6 Duke improves to 12-1.
Worsley's decision came late into the afternoon, once the other matches had been decided. Each game had a number of extremely long points, most in which Worsley was able to capitalize. She was able to get ahead early, clinching the first set, 6-4. Arasa returned the favor in the second, but Worsley was too strong in the tiebreaker, stealing the win with a line of 6-4, 4-6(3). The victory for Worsley is her first against a ranked opponent this season. The point for the Wolfpack marks the first time since the 1987 season that it has scored against the Blue Devils, one of the nations most dominating squads.
Duke was able to sweep the doubles matches. Each of its pairs are ranked in the top-25 of the ITA poll, and took the other five singles matches in straight sets.
The Wolfpack now turns its attention to Clemson, which comes to Raleigh on Friday. The Tigers are currently listed in the rankings at No. 22 and features Julie Coin, who is ranked individually at No. 28. She and partner Laurence Jayet are ranked at No. 27 in doubles. Action will begin at 2 p.m. at the Cary Tennis Center.
