Bethlehem, Pa. - Lehigh won seven of 10 matches Friday night to hand the NC State wrestling team a 33-8 defeat and snap the Wolfpack's three-match winning streak. NC State fell to 5-6 with the loss, while the fifth-ranked Mountain Hawks won their 10th match in a row to improve to 14-3.
The dual began at 133 pounds, and Lehigh freshman Cory Coopmerman set the pace for the Mountain Hawks with a 6-0 win over sophomore Daniel Pacitti, who was disqualified at the end of the second period after being called for a flagrant misconduct penalty. That penalty also cost NC State one point in the team score. Prior to the disqualification Pacitti trailed Cooperman 4-0. At 141, senior Tristan Boyd of Lehigh won a 6-1 decision over junior Ryan McCallum.
Sophomore Tommy Rohn and junior Jake Giamoni of NC State squared off at 149, and the two took a scoreless tie into the third period. Midway through the final period, Giamoni took an injury timeout, but shortly after the timeout Giamoni picked up a pair of takedowns to record a 4-1 decision for the Pack. The win was Giamoni's fourth in a row and his sixth in his last seven matches. He is 11-8 on the season.
At 157, freshman Brian Lamay came out strong against freshman Bryant Reams, finishing with a 15-0 technical fall.
The match between senior Ted Dufresne and junior Dustin Kawa at 165 was the closest of the night. After two periods it was squared at 4-4. In an intense battle that was decided in the last seconds of the third period, Kawa won an 8-5 decision over Dufresne to run his winning streak to 10 matches. Kawa, 14-3 on the season, is 10-1 at 165 pounds.
The match at 184 saw Lehigh freshman Travis Frick defeat Jon Goodwin 5-3. Junior All-American Jon Trenge picked up a fall at 197 for the Mountain Hawks, pinning Matt Gulliver at the 2:04 mark. At heavyweight junior Joe Sahl led freshman Wolfpack Leroy Harris 5-4 at the end of the first period and 8-4 at the conclusion of the second. Sahl cruised to an 18-7 major decision.
The final match at 125 was between junior Mario Stuart and senior George Cintron of NC State. Cintron led 1-0 after two periods. Stuart took a 3-2 lead through the third period, but Cintron took Stewart down seconds before the final horn to take a 4-3 win for the Pack and extend his personal winning streak to 10 matches. Cintron improved to 13-4 on the season.
The victory was the 700th win in the history of the Lehigh program, making Lehigh just the ninth Division I wrestling program to reach that milestone.
