
NC State Gymnastics Wins Wolfpack Invitational

Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State gymnastics team scored a season-high 196.100 and won the annual Wolfpack Invitational held Friday night at Reynolds Coliseum. For the first time this season NC State scored at least a 49.000 on three of the four events. North Carolina finished second with a team score of 195.300, No. 23 Minnesota was third with a 194.650, and Illinois State took fourth with a 193.475.
The Wolfpack (12-4) started the night out on floor and finished with a team score of 48.550. Junior Molly Pennington was once again the Pack's top finisher as she scored a 9.85 for a second place finish. Classmate Cheryl Potacco turned in a score of 9.775 for fifth place, while Leah Sabo was eighth with a 9.725. Senior Adina Stock and freshman Kylah Bachman each notched a 9.6 and tied for 15th.
NC State continued its strong season on bars, an event it ranks 12th nationally. The Pack scored a 49.250, not counting a score less than 9.8. Senior Marlyn Madey won her third straight bars title, this week scoring a 9.925. Sabo was close behind with her 9.875 for a second place. For the second straight event Stock and Bachman both tied, this event they scored a 9.825 and tied for sixth. Senior Stephanie Southard notched a 9.8 and took home 10th.
The Pack almost tied its impressive score on bars with a season-best team score of 49.225 on beam. Sabo led the way for NC State scoring a 9.9 and finishing fourth. Kello was close behind, with her score of 9.875 to place seventh. Bachman and senior Cara Dougherty each turned in scores of 9.825 to tie for 11th. Madey was 13th with her 9.8 to start the event.
For the third time on the evening, the Wolfpack scored at least a 49.000 when the Pack turned in a team score of 49.075 on floor. Sabo notched her second score of 9.9 on the evening on floor, and finished first. Bundy turned in a season-best performance with her 9.825 and second place finish. Madey and sophomore Cori Goldstein tied for fourth by scoring a 9.8. Stock notched a 9.75 for the Pack's final score.
Sabo scored a season-best 39.400 in the all-around, the sixth best score in school history, and finished first.
NC State will host its final home meet of the 2003 season next weekend. The Wolfpack will take on James Madison, Pittsburgh and William & Mary Saturday March 8 at 7:00 p.m.
