Women's Basketball Falls At Virginia, 58-54

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- NC State women's basketball lost to Virginia, 58-54 on Thursday, Feb. 13. The Wolfpack finished with two in double figures, which included a game-high 16 points from senior Carisse Moody. For Virginia, sophomore Brandi Teamer tallied 15 points.
Mid-way through the first half, the Pack had a 15-point lead. In fact, the Pack held the Cavaliers scoreless in their first three possessions. Leading up to the 15-point lead, NC State was dominating Virginia. The score stood at 25-10 with 8:48 to go. However, the Cavaliers regrouped and began to chip away at the lead. After outscoring the Pack 17-2 over the course of four minutes, UVa had tied the game at 27. The two teams would then toy with the lead in the final moments of the half. Although Virginia led at the break, 33-31, the first 20 minutes had proven to result in an equally played first half. NC State held the advantage in shooting with 41.4 percent, compared to just 33.3 percent from Virginia. The Cavaliers scored their points from the charity stripe, making good on 12-16, to a perfect 5-5 from NC State. The Wolfpack's scoring attack was well rounded as well, having all but one player with a bucket. Moody led the way with eight points in 15 minutes on 3-6 shooting. Defensively the Pack held Virginia's leading scorer, Cherisse Graham, to just three points.
The tables turned in the second half as Virginia broke out to a 13-point lead after nine minutes played. Moody scored the Pack's first six points of the half, tacking on to her six points in the final moments of the first half. Redshirt-junior Kaayla Chones and sophomore Liz Bailey aided in the scoring effort, as Chones tallied eight points and Bailey chipped in a three-pointer to push the squad to within four. NC State had persevered and cut the Virginia lead to one at 54-53 with 1:20 remaining. Free throws were the name of the game in the final moments for Virginia as it made 4-4 attempts to 1-2 from the Pack. NC State did finish on top in shooting percentage at 37 to 32 percent. Both teams finished 8-25 from the floor in the second half.
Moody finished 6-14, 4-6 from the line and had four rebounds. Chones finished with 11 points, while senior Amy Simpson and redhsirt-junior Terah James paced the Pack in rebounding with six a piece.
NC State fell to 10-13 overall and 5-7 in the ACC, while Virginia improved to 11-12 and 5-7 in the ACC. NC State takes a break before returning to action at Clemson on Thursday, Feb. 20, 7 p.m.
NC State Note: Moody needs just two points to become the 22nd NC State player to tally 1,000 career points.
