College Park, Md.- Maryland held on for the 74-72 overtime win over NC State at the Comcast Center on Saturday night. Senior guard Renneika Razor led all scorers with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Saturday's attendance of 5,078 was the largest at a Maryland women's basketball game since Feb. 24, 1996, vs. Virginia.
After Alvine Mendeng put NC State up by two just five seconds into the game, it would take Maryland until the 6:06 mark when two free throws by Charmaine Carr and a layup from Razor put the Terps up by three points. The Pack regained the lead minutes later and sprung out to an eight-point advantage by the half.
Razor and freshman center Carr led the Terps' first-half efforts with eight points each. Razor also notched six of her career-high tying 11 rebounds in the opening half.
NC State opened up a 10-point lead 5:31 into the second half before the Terps began to chip away the Wolfpack advantage. Maryland launched a 7-0 run over a seven-minute stretch ending with a Chrissy Fisher three-point basket to bring the deficit down to three points. Fisher ended the night with 13 points and was one of four Terps in double figures.
The Terps didn't actually take the lead until the 1:43 mark on two free throws from Razor. NC State's Terah James tied it up with a jumper 11 seconds eventually sending the game into overtime tied 57-57.
On the strength of buckets from Fisher and Delvona Oliver, Maryland took a five-point lead in overtime and held on down the stretch for the 74-72 victory. It was Maryland's first overtime game of the season and spelled first-year head coach Brenda Frese's first overtime win at Maryland.
Mendeng finished with a career-high 13 rebounds and eight points to lead all board getters. James earned her 10th double-digit game of the season with her season-high 15 points, which included 13 in the second half. It was also James' 3-pointer in the final seconds of overtime to put the Pack within two points. James had the honor of making the last field goal in each of the three halves. Redshirt-junior Kaayla Chones finished with 14 points, while senior Carisse Moody added 12 points. The Pack had a season-low nine turnovers and outshot the Terrapins, 29-24.
NC State, now 9-11 and 4-5 in the ACC will host No. 7 North Carolina on Friday, Feb. 7. Head coach Kay Yow will honored by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame when they raise a banner in recognition of her enshrinement into the Hall.
