Middle hitter Alexis Geocaris had 11 kills to lead Virginia over the NC State volleyball team Friday night at Reynolds Coliseum, 3-0. The Cavaliers took the match by the scores of 30-23, 30-25 and 30-22, and improved to 22-7 overall, 6-7 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Meanwhile, the Wolfpack fell to 7-22 overall, 0-14 in conference play.
It was senior night for NC State, as seniors Caroline Frede and Crystal Shannon were honored prior to the match. Frede, the team's libero finished the night with 12 digs, while the setter Shannon dished out eight assists to go with five digs of her own. Leading the Wolfpack's attack, was sophomore outside hitter Adeola Kosoko, who had a team-best seven kills off a .500 attack percentage. Fellow setter, freshman Melissa Rabe finished with a team-best 14 assists.
But it was NC State's defense that came up big, combining for 11 team blocks to Virginia's six. Junior middle blocker Sarah Ensminger led the team with six block assists, while Kosoko and sophomore rightside Kelly Althaus each had five, and junior middle blocker Paige Gilliam tacked on another four block assists.
In addition to Geocaris, the Cavaliers were led by outside hitters Paige Davis and Emily Perilli and middle hitter Shannon Boyle, all of who totaled nine kills in the match. Setters Emily Kirkwood and Kathleen Branagh recorded 23 and 22 assists respectively, while Perilli and libero Whitney Ashcraft led Virginia's defense with 12 digs apiece.
Tonight's match marked the end of the regular home season for the Wolfpack. NC State will play its final two regular season conference matches next weekend at Duke and at Wake Forest.
