Wolfpack Volleyball Falls in Four at Duke

Sophomore outside hitter Casey Wyatt finished with 13 kills for NC State, as the Wolfpack took game one against Duke Friday night in Cameron Indoor Stadium, only to see the Blue Devils rally back to grab a 3-1 victory in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Duke took the match by scores of 28-30, 30-17, 30-21, 30-18. The loss dropped NC State to 7-23 on the season, 0-15 in conference play, while the Blue Devils improved to 10-17, 6-9 in the ACC.
The Wolfpack took advantage of a sluggish start by the Blue Devils. NC State hit .120 as a team in game one, while Duke had only a mere .080. Tack on four blocks and three aces in favor of the Wolfpack and NC State took the early lead.
The Blue Devils, however, began to show signs of life in the second game of the evening, putting together a 13-1 run midway through the game to take a commanding 25-13 lead. NC State was held to a -.024 hitting percentage in game two, and ultimately suffered the loss that tied the match at 1-1.
Duke would take game three due in part to a team attack percentage of .222. Then in the final game of the match, the Blue Devils hit a match-high .432, while also recording four blocks and three service aces of its own to claim the match.
For Wyatt, her 13 kills marked a new career-best, coming off a .321 attack percentage. She also added seven digs and a block assist defensively. Also aiding the Wolfpack's attack was junior middle blockers Sarah Ensminger and Maya Mapp, both of who tallied eight kills against Duke. Meanwhile, senior libero Caroline Frede and junior outside hitter Melanie Rowe recorded 13 and 12 digs respectively. Setters Melissa Rabe and Crystal Shannon combined to dish out 38 assists on the night.
The Blue Devils were led by senior Katie Gilman, who finished with her fourth double-double of the season, recording a match-high 20 kills and 16 digs. Senior Tassy Rufai added 13 kills, nine digs and four blocks, while freshman Tealle Hunkus had 13 kills and seven digs. Senior Arielle Linderman tallied 55 assists, along with 11 digs, four blocks and three service aces.
The Wolfpack travels to Wake Forest Saturday for the last match of the regular season. Start time is set for 6 p.m.
