GREENVILLE, N.C. - Fresh off an easy romp through the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, the NC State men's cross country team cruised to an easy first-place finish in the NCAA Southeast Regional Championship on Saturday, finishing 47 points ahead of runner-up Kentucky, 38-85.
The Wolfpack scored at 4-7-8-9-10, with its sixth- and seventh-place runners scoring 16th and 31st. Junior Andy Smith, the individual ACC men's champion, paced NC State by running fourth in the race, 13 seconds behind individual champion Thomas Morgan of Kentucky.
The Pack salted the race away by running as a pack, with senior Chad Pearson, freshman Bobby Mack, freshman Wesley Smith and redshirt-freshman Allen Bader finishing eighth, ninth, 10th and11th, respectively, less than two seconds apart. Senior Devin Swann was 17th and sophomore Kurtis Marlowe was 33rd.
Caleb Bailey of Western Carolina (6th place) and Kevin Crosby of Furman (22nd) ran independently and did not count in the team scoring, which accounts for the discrepancy between where NC State's runners finished in the race and the points they scored for the team.
By winning the regional championship, the Wolfpack automatically advances as a team to the NCAA Championships, which will be held Monday, November 24 at the University of Northern Iowa.
