Pack Women Finish Strong Second at ACC Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - NC State finished second at the Atlantic Coast Conference cross country championships on Saturday in Winston-Salem, held on the campus of Wake Forest University. The Wolfpack women were led by sophomore Julia Lucas, who finished fourth overall. The team turned in a score of 44 points, four points shy of capturing the conference title, which went to North Carolina for the first time since 1999.
Tar Heel Shalane Flanagan, who covered the 6K course in 19:22.8 was crowned the individual champion. Flanagan became the league's first women's cross country performer to win the event in four consecutive years.
NC State's Lucas completed the course in 20:41.0, and was closely followed by senior teammates Renee Gunning and Lucinda Hull, who finished fifth and sixth respectively. The three earned all-conference honors for their impressive performances.
Redshirt-freshman Amy Arnold had her best outing of the year, finishing as the squad's fourth scorer in 13th. Junior Josianne Lauber finished less than a second and a half later in 16th to complete scoring.
Junior Kara Price was 18th, Kristina Roth, a sophomore, finished 25th and senior Claudin Hull was 27th.
The squad was without two-time All-American Kristin Price, who is expected to be available later in the season. The Pack also experienced a last-second lineup change when Sarah Powell was forced to miss the race with a foot injury.
Wake Forest finished third with 62 points and was followed by Duke (4th - 120), Florida State (5th - 135), Virginia (6th - 142), Maryland (7th - 209), Georgia Tech (8th - 229) and Clemson (9th - 282).
The squad will refocus its efforts on finishing strongly at the District III meet on November 15 in Greenville, N.C.
