Head Coach Kay Yow:
Opening statement:
"We really had a slow start and sputtered offensively in the first
half. We really played hard on the defensive end and did what we needed
to do there, but we were just not aggressive enough offensively in the
first half. Second half, I thought we played much more aggressively.
Offensively, we maintained their defensive intensity. I thought we
really played well in the second half, especially after falling behind
in the second half. Mentally, they [NC State] had to overcome all of
that and I thought they just put it behind them and went out and played
the second half as another half. I was really pleased with a lot of
things that we were able to do in the second half."
On poor shooting in the first half:
"We had so many shots around the basket that we didn't put down in the
first half. We had a back-door cut that we would've been wide open and
we missed on the pass. Just a number of things like that happened to us.
Then some wide-open looks that just didn't go down. It was frustrating.
Then, we had to come back and play a second half, and just move past all
that frustration and create something else for ourselves in the second
half."
On comeback in second half:
"I think that speaks volumes [for our team]. I really like the way that
we never gave up tonight because you get 20 points down and you've
already played the first half offensively like we did; there's a point
where some teams can really start to bend and perhaps even break. But
that never happened. They [NC State] just dug in and kept playing hard
and just kept believing and kept away at it and actually got themselves
back into the ball game. It's definitely a tremendous thing to build on.
The way that we played the last 20 minutes, it's something that we need
to do for 40 minutes."
Gail Goestenkors
"I am very happy to come away with a win. It was one of the ugliest games offensively I have seen in a long time. I give credit to both defensives. It was one of our best defensive halves of the season."
On playing at Reynolds:
"State is always a tough place for us to play and tonight was no
exception. State is a gritty team."
" I thought we did a great job on the boards tonight."
On Chones:
" Our goal was to limit her touches. When she got the ball we wanted
to double team. Tonight she showed she has become a better passer."
On upcoming game against UConn
"I'm so ready for this game. The hype has been incredible. It's all
people want to talk about. I am so thankful it is finally here. It's
time.
I've always felt we have great depth. Different people will play well on different nights. If certain players aren't on, that is the luxury of depth because you can try multiple options."
Quote from Beard
"We're grateful to come out with a victory. But we let the lead slip
away. That's is unexceptable for us."
" I tried to attack the basket more, but it was within the context of
the offense."
Quote from Matyasovsky on home court advantage against UConn
"It is a tremendous advantage. It is an awesome place to play and it
is sold-out. Hopefully the crazies will get into it."
