ACC Anounces 50th Anniversary Women's Track & Field Squads

Raleigh, N.C. - The Atlantic Coast Conference 50th Anniversary Women's Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Team were announced today by Commissioner John Swofford. The teams were voted on by the nine league institutions as decided by the league's 50th Anniversary Committee.
In indoor, North Carolina led all league schools with 15 members on the Golden Anniversary team while Clemson was second with nine honorees. Virginia had seven runners selected, followed by Georgia Tech (6), Florida State (5), Maryland and Wake Forest with three apiece, NC State (2), and Duke with one.

Laurie Gomez NC State 1989-1992 Boardman, Ohio Janet Smith NC State 1986-1989 Edison, N.J.Laurie Gomez, NC State (1989-1992): GTE Academic All American in 1992 ... recipient of the Marie James Post Graduate scholarship and NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship both in 1992 ... recipient of the H.C. Kennett Award twice, in 1991 and 1992, given annually to the outstanding all-around student-athlete at NC State ... All-American honors six times ... Three times in the 5000 meters (indoor) from 1990 to 1992, twice in the 5000 meters (outdoor) in 1990 and 1991, and once in the 3000 meters in 1992 ... NCAA Champion in the 5000 meters in 1991 and twice an ACC Champion in the 5000 meters in 1991 and 1992 ... She earned All-Conference honors in 1991 and 1992 ... She was the fastest woman in NC 1991 ... member of the second fastest 4x1500 meter relay team (outdoor) in school history with a time of 18:15.46 set in 1990 ... Ranks third in school history in the mile with a time of 4:44.60 set in 1990, fourth in the 3000 meters with a time of 9:08.12 set in 1992, and fifth in the 5000 meters with a time of 15:55.26i set in 1991.
Janet Smith, NC State (1986-1989): Earned All-American honors seven times ... Once for the 5000 meters (indoor) in 1989; three times for the 5000 meters (outdoor) in 1986, 1988, and 1989; and twice for the 10000 meters (outdoor) in 1988 and 1989 ... three time ACC Champion, once for the 5000 meters (indoor) in 1989; once for the 5000 meters (outdoor) in 1988; and once for the 3000 meters (outdoor) in 1989 ... Earned All-Conference honors twice for indoor in 1987 and 1989 and three times for outdoor in 1986, 1988, and 1989 ... member of the 1985 and 1986 ACC runner-up teams ... the fastest in NC State history in the two-mile (indoor) with a time of 10:02.95 set in 1987 ... ranks fifth in school hi tory in the 10,000 meters (outdoor) with a time of 33:05.43 set in 1987 and eighth in the 5000 meters (outdoor) with a time of 16:09.61 set in 1986 ... A member of the fastest 4x1500 meter relay team (outdoor) with a time of 18:11.34 set in 1986.

Julie Shea, NC State (1978-1981): Recipient of the Broderick Cup, given annually to the outstanding women's collegiate athlete of the year, and the Broderick Award, given annually to the outstanding women's collegiate cross cou try runner, both in 1980 ... only woman from NC State to ever be awar ed the Broderick Cup ... Recipient of the Anthony J. McKelvin Award twice in 1980 and 1981, the only person from NC State to recieve this award ... Was awarded the H.C. Kennett Award in 1980-81 given ann ally to the outstanding all-around student-athlete at NC State ... recip ent of the Alumni Athletic Trophy in 1981 presented annually by the NC State Alumni Association to the outstanding senior athlete, as voted upon by the student body ... AIAW Champion in 1979 and 1981 in the 5000 meters and won the distance triple crown (3000, 5000, and 10000 meters) in 1980, which has never been duplicated by anyone in any national or international championship ... Garnered All-American honors eight times, three times for the 3000 meters from 1978 to 1980, four times for the 5000 meters from 1978 to 1981, and once for the 10000 meters in 1980 ... member of the fastest mile relay team in school history with a time of 4:02.37 and the fastest two-mile relay team with a time of 9:05.61 both set in 1981 ... Ranks second all-time at NC State in the 3000 meters with a time of 9:02.40, second in the 5000 meters with a time of 15:41.28, and third in the 10000 meters with a time of 33:02.32 all set in 1980.

Betty Springs, NC State (1980-1983): Broderick Award in 1981, given annually to the outstanding women's collegiate cross country runner ... Recipient of the H.C. Kennett Award twice in 1981-82 and 1982-83, which is given annually to the outstanding all-around student-athlete at NC State ... earned All-American honors six times, three times for the 5000 meters in 1980, 1981, and 1983; and three times for the 10000 meters in 1980, 1981, and 1983 ... She spent the 1982 season recovering from surgery to remove a di lodged extra bone in her left foot, was able to recover and regain her champ onship status ... Twice an NCAA Champion for the 5000 meters and the 10000 meters both in 1983 ... ACC Champion also in 1983 for the 10000 meters ... She ranks first all-time in school history in the 3000 meters with a time of 8:59.79, first in the 5000 meters with a time of 15:33.43, and second in the 10000 meters with a time of 33:01.02 all set in 1983 ... member of the fastest mile relay team with a time of 4:02.37 and the two-mile relay team with a time of 9:05.61 both set in 1981.
