WILMINGTON, N.C. - Junior righthander Brad Overton turned in his best career performance, scattering three hits over seven innings, and streaking UNC Wilmington used two big innings to throttle North Carolina State, 17-1, in non-conference college baseball action at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks extended their winning streak to eight games and improved to 34-11 with the victory. The Wolfpack dropped its fourth straight and dipped to 26-21.
Overton (2-0) picked up the win by working a career-high seven innings, allowing one run on three hits, walking two and striking out six. The Winston-Salem, N.C., product was masterful in dominating the Wolfpack, retiring 14 of the first 16 batters he faced and not allowing a hit until a sinking single to rightfield by Sam Esposito in the top of the sixth. State starter Daryl Minugh (3-1) lasted just 2 2/3 innings and surrendered five runs on eight hits, walking one and fanning two.
Four Seahawks collected three hits apiece for the Seahawks, who banged out 22 hits, the most against the NCSU pitching staff this season. Sophomore designated hitter Chip Grawey went 3-for-4 with one run batted in, junior first baseman Matt Wright went 3-for-4 with one RBI, junior outfielder Jason Schindler went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI's and junior infielder Russ Simmerman went 3-for-5 with a double, homer and five RBI's.
Senior outfielder Brian Wright went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and sophomore catcher Colt Morton went 1-for-4 with a solo home run for NCSU.
UNCW sent nine batters to the plate in exploding for five runs on five hits with three stolen bases in the bottom half of the third inning. Grawey started it off with a single to leftfield and was forced out at second by Jamie Hemingway. After Hemingway stole his 19th base of the season, Wright delivered an RBI single to give the Seahawks a 1-0 edge. Schindler then slammed his fourth homer of the season, a rocket shot over the leftfield wall that staked UNCW to a 3-0 advantage. Simmerman later completed the scoring with a two-out, two-run single through the right side of the infield, staking the Seahawks to a 5-0 cushion.
The Seahawks increased their lead to 12-0 with a seven spot in the fourth. Schindler had a two-run single and Eric Mitchell slugged a three-run homer to highlight the decisive frame. UNCW wound up scoring seven runs on six hits to put the game away early.
NCSU avoided the shutout with one out in the top of the seventh when Morton hit a towering homer over the leftfield wall for his 10th round tripper of the season.
The Seahawks return to the diamond Wednesday for a 7 p.m. matchup against East Carolina at Harrington Field in Greenville. The Wolfpack travel to Maryland on Thursday for a 7 p.m. contest.
