Wolfpack Men are Third After Day One at ACC Championships

Chapel Hill, N.C. - After one day of competition, the NC State women's team is currently in first place with a total of 48.5 points, while the men's squad is third with 25 points at the 2002 ACC Indoor Championships being held at North carolina this weekend. The women are being challenged by Geogia Tech in second (46 points) and Florida State in third (34 points), while the men are close behind the leaders North Carolina with 27 points and Georgia Tech is second with 26 points.
"We had a great team effort," said NC State head coach Rollie Geiger. "On the women's side everyone did well especially gaining two NCAA Automatic times in the 5,000 meters, plus it is nice to see the women's team doing well after being ninth at last year's ACC Championships. We are really close on the men's side right now, and we did well in a lot of events there as well. We will need a solid team effort tomorrow, because both sides will probably be decided during the last couple events."
The men claimed three of the top-five spots in the 5,000 meters. Junior Chad Pearson won the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:25.70. Senior Ryan Woods was third (14:25.70) and junior David Patterson took fifth (14:35.53). Andy Smith was the fifth NC State runner in the top-10, he was ninth (14:47.02).
The men's team received five times in the preliminary rounds that advanced to the finals. Senior Tyrone Dozier qualified for the finals in both the 200 meters and the 400 meters. Dozier placed second in the 200 meters (21.80) and was fourth in the 400 meters (48.71). Joining Dozier in the finals of the 400 meters will be Derrick High after he finished eighth with a time of 48.89. Dozier will also have company in the 200 meter finals, as Joseph Brent qualified after recording a fifth place finish with a time of 21.86. In teh 60 meters, T.J. Giwa made the finals when he placed thid in the prelims running a 6.84. Not making the finals were Brent in the 60 meters (ninth - 6.92) and Giwa in the 200 meters (ninth - 22.17).
In the shot put, Randy Cass was eighth with a heave of 49'03.75" Ryan Furlough was 14th in that same event (44'03.50". The men's DMR squad took fifth running a 10:07.87. In other runner events, Nick Mangum recorded an 11th place finish in the mile with a time of 4:16.69, while Andrew Kerins was 17th in the 800 meters (1:56.55), followed by Adam McGugan who was 21st (1:57.94).
The NC State women's team recorded two NCAA Automatic times in the 5,000 meters. Sophomore Kristin Price was crowned ACC Champion and finished with a time of 16:08.15, more than 13 seconds than the automatic mark. Senior Amy Beykirch also landed a spot at the upcoming NCAA Championships in the 5,000 meters when she ran a 16:12.41 and finished third. Also in that same race, Josie Lauber was fifth with a time of 16:52.72, followed by Beth Fonner in eighth (17:09.18) and Beth Kraft in ninth (17:12.75).
Also winning a ACC Championship was Kristen Pace. Pace placed first in the high jump with a top leap of 5'08.50". Sophomore Kelly Smoke set a new NC State indoor record in the weight throw, when she netted a top distance of 55'03" for a sixth place finish. Patricia Watson was 17th in the weight throw (45'08"). Also doing well in the field events was senior Katie Bolac who recorded a second place finish in the pole vault by clearing 12'03.50". Freshman Teresa Reed was seventh in that same event (11'03.75").
The wolfpack women notched three times that will be advancing to tomorrow's finals in the running events. Sophomore Felicia Fant will be running in the finals of both the 60 meters and the 200 meters. Fant was eighth in both races, running the 60 meters in 7.59 and the 200 meters in 24.83. Senior Katie Sabino will also be running in tommorw's finals, when she placed sixth in the mile with a time of 4:53.71.
Other results saw freshman Ebony Foster place 11th in teh 60 meters (7.71) and 12th in the 200 meters (25.02). Adrianne Adams took 24th in the 60 meters (8.08), while Adrienne Vinson was 15th in teh 60 hurdles (9.10) followed closely by Krystal Neely in 16th place (9.15). Also in the mile, Janelle Vadnais was 15th with a time of 5:07.83 and Leslie Jimison was 18th (5:15.12). In the 800 meters, Renae Robinson placed 15th (2:16.47), Karen Medlin 20th (2:22.53), and Karen Sykes 22nd (2:22.90). The women's DMR squad was fourth running a time of 12:00.16.
The ACC Championships will resume tomorrow beginning at 10:00 a.m with the field events, while the running events begin at 1:00 p.m.
