No. 24 Gymnastics Wins URI Invitational

Kingston, R.I. - The No. 24 NC State gymnastics team put together a team score of 194.600 and finished first at the fourth annual URI Invitational at the University of Rhode Island. The Pack scored over a 194.000 on the road for the second straight week, and defeated Rhode Island (190.925), Brown (190.450), Yale (189.650), and Massachusetts (189.575).
The Pack recorded the top-three scores on vault for the day. Senior Kelli Brown took top honors with her score of 9.65. Senior Aimee Panton and sophomore Molly Pennington tied for second place each notching a 9.575. Freshman Andrea Petrocelli was sixth with a 9.525, while junior Stephanie Southard was ninth with a 9.475.
NC State also had a strong showing on the bars, with all six routines in the top-10. Panton recorded her second second-place finish of the day on bars, with a 9.9. Brown was third with a 9.85, followed by junior Adina Stock in fourth (9.825) and Southard in fifth (9.8). Senior Laura Jazab (sixth) and junior Marlyn Madey (ninth) both placed in the top-10.
The Pack also claimed the title on beam. Junior Cara Dougherty and freshman Cori Goldstein tied for first place with each scoring a 9.9. It was the first event title for both of them. Fellow freshman Andrea Petrocelli was close behind in fourth with a 9.875, followed by senior Laura Jazab in fifth with a 9.825.
Goldstein was also NC State's top finisher on floor, recorded a third place finish with a score of 9.85. Sophomore Alison Bundy was fourth with a 9.825, while Dougherty was the next highest finishers in 12th (9.7).
NC State will host its first meet of the 2002 season this Friday. Auburn, Nebraska, and William & Mary will all take part in the annual Hearts Invitational this Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
