Raleigh, N.C.--Rakel Logadottir's goal at 115:07 of the second overtime sealed a 2-1 victory by the UNC Greensboro Spartans over the NC State Wolfpack in women's soccer action Tuesday evening.
The Wolfpack (1-1) drew first blood in the contest when sophomore Katherine Warman (Coquitlam, British Columbia) hammered a feed from freshman Lydia Bojcun into the right corner of the net at 38:07 of the first half for a 1-0 lead.
The match stayed that way until Megan Bynum netted the equalizer for the Spartans on a crossing feed from Jill Barrett at 75:01 of the contest.
NC State controlled much of the two overtime periods, continuously penetrating the UNC Greensboro (2-0) defense for breakaways, but could not come away with a goal. The Wolfpack continued the assault until the Spartans countered with Logadottir's tally.
NC State outshot UNC Greensboro by one (21-20), while UNC Greensboro racked up 24 fouls to only 13 for the Wolfpack.
Junior Gretchen Lear (Springfield, Virginia) stopped 11 Spartan shots on the night, while Spartan goalkeeper Kathryn Clewley turned away 7 NC State shots.
Freshman Annika Schmidt (Welver, Germany) and junior Adrienne Barnes (Clemmons, North Carolina) led the Wolfpack with five shots apiece.
"This is obviously a disappointing loss for us," NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan said. "We were the stronger team out there tonight but we had a couple of lapses. We took it to them for most of the game and had several excellent scoring opportunities, but couldn't capitalize."
The Wolfpack will now travel to James Madison to compete in the JMU Comfort Inn Invitational Friday versus Rutgers. Match time is set for 5:00 p.m.
