NC State Women Fall At Wake Forest

Winston-Salem, N.C.- Stacy Roeck scored on a rebound in front of the NC State net to give the host Wake Forest Demon Deacons a 1-0 victory over the NC State Wolfpack at Dennis Spry Stadium in ACC women's soccer action Friday evening. The victory moves Wake to 2-3-1 on the season and 2-0 in the ACC, while the Wolfpack drops to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in the ACC.
The action began fast and furious as Wake Forest had two chances in front of the Wolfpack net in the eighth minute, including a blast from point-blank range by Liz McDowell. Wolfpack defender Jaci Harper, however, cleared the shot.
Senior midfielder Kelly Blaggie nearly put the Wolfpack on top in the 14th minute on a header attempt that went just over the crossbar. In the 22nd minute, sophomore forward Katherine Warman volleyed a Deacon clearance just over the post, which resulted in a Wake corner kick.
Warman made another valiant attempt at her third tally of the season in the 47th minute when sophomore forward Lindsey Underwood sent a crossing pass through the Wake defense. Warman collected the pass just inside the box and rifled a blast that caromed off Wake goalkeeper Erin Regan.
State had many opportunities to score in the second half including two attempts by freshman forward Nicole Blume that sailed high. Junior forward Adrienne Barnes had a one-on-one chance with a Wake defender before she was apparently taken down in the Wake box before she could fire a shot.
"We played well," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "We just took it to them at times. Our finishing is what is killing us. We can't keep hitting shots over the bar. We've got to keep hammering away."
"I'm just disappointed for our team," continued Kerrigan. "We have to keep moving the ball really well, and things will happen for us."
The Wolfpack women will next travel to Elon on Wednesday for a non-conference tilt at 4:00 p.m.
