Elon College, N.C.-Junior Rachel Durr (Kingwood, Tx.) netted her first goal in two years to give the Wolfpack women's soccer squad a 2-1 road victory over Elon Wednesday afternoon. The win moves the Wolfpack to 3-5 on the season, while the Elon Phoenix fall to 2-6 in 2001.
The match began ominously for the Wolfpack, however, as Elon hammered home a goal just 1:32 into the match by Kate Schabo on a feed from Jessica Mills. The Wolfpack, though, would regroup and control much of the first half of action, outshooting the Phoenix 12-3.
It was more of the same in the second half as NC State continued to pepper the Elon net with blasts, holding a 10-3 advantage in shots in the half. Junior Adrienne Barnes (Clemmons, N.C.), finally broke through with her third goal of the season at the 56:53 mark to even the score at 1. Barnes scored when she dribbled through the Elon defense and rifled a shot that deflected off Phoenix goalkeeper Kara Zagol into the left corner of the net.
The game would stay deadlocked until the 88th minute when Durr collected a clearing attempt by the Elon defense and deposited the ball just inside the far post for the game-winner.
For the match, NC State outshot Elon 22-6 and held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
"It wasn't pretty but we found a way to win," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "That is the sign of a good team when you can do that. We were able to put away two chances in the second half, which I really liked to see."
"We've been after Adrienne all year to take on people, and she took on a couple players several times today. Two times the keeper made nice saves, and once she got the goal. That was good to see."
The Wolfpack will next face Virginia Commonwealth at 4:00 p.m. on Friday at Method Road Soccer Stadium.
