Raleigh, N.C.-Junior Adrienne Barnes (Clemmons, N.C.) netted a penalty shot at 63:15 of the second half to give the NC State women's soccer squad a 1-0 victory over Virginia Commonwealth Friday evening. The Wolfpack is now 4-5 overall, while Virginia Commonwealth drops to 5-5-1 on the the season.
The Wolfpack controlled much of the first half of action, taking 11 shots in the first half to only 4 for Virginia Commonwealth. Sophomore Lindsey Underwood (Princess Anne, Maryland) twice charged down the field into scoring position but was turned aside both times in the VCU box.
NC State came out in the second half with even more energy, blasting seven second half shots to only four for VCU. The action became fast and furious in the 54th minute when Barnes drilled a 20-yard shot over the outstretched arms of Ram goalkeeper Chrissy Lloyd. However, the ball skidded off the crossbar for a VCU goal kick.
Two minutes later, freshman Lydia Bojcun (Hamilton Square, New Jersey) attempted to touch the ball by Lloyd on a crossing attempt but found the left post. VCU took the ball the other way and Jen Parsons nearly put the Rams on top with an 18-yard shot that sailed just above the Wolfpack crossbar.
Barnes was later awarded the penalty shot after junior forward Jordan Allison was taken down by a VCU defender just inside the six yard box. Barned calmly slotted the ball into the left side of the net for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Junior goalkeeper Gretchen Lear recorded her first shutout of the season and the ninth of her three-year career with four saves. Lloyd made six saves in the loss.
"It's good to get a shutout," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "Our backs were able to hold us together. Gretchen just did a great job of directing them and keeping us organized back there."
"I'm also really proud of the way our offense performed out there. We did a good just of attacking a lot of different defenses that they threw at us."
For the match, NC State outshot the Rams 18-9, despite the absence of freshman forward Annika Schmidt, who missed the game with a knee injury she suffered in Wednesday's 2-1 victory over Elon.
