Raleigh, N.C.-Junior Adrienne Barnes (Clemmons, N.C.) slashed through the Campbell defense and netted the game-winning tally at 62:01 of the match to give the NC State women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Campbell. NC State moves to an even 5-5 on the season, while Campbell drops to 6-4 overall.
Midfield play was the dominant factor in the first half for both squads with neither team having many scoring opportunites. In the 15th minute, sophomore Katherine Warman (Maple Ridge, B.C.) broke free from a Camel defender to launch a 30-yard shot that sailed just over the crossbar. NC State outshot Campbell 8-2 in the half.
The Wolfpack came out firing in the second half when two shots off the foot of senior midfielder Kelly Blaggie (Clearwater, Fl.) were knocked away by a diving Erin Switalski of Campbell within the first five minutes. Switalski had nine saves for the game.
NC State finally broke through when junior Colette Seville (Wenonah, N.J.) fed sophomore Lindsey Underwood (Princess Anne, Md.) who slotted a pass to Barnes. Barnes knifed through three defenders and chipped the ball over Switalski for her fifth goal of the season.
NC State outshot Campbell 18-4 for the game and held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Wolfpack goalkeeper Gretchen Lear (Springfield, Va.) recorded her second consecutive shutout and the tenth of her career.
"Campbell was a very physical team," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "We made adjustments at halftime and it really paid off for us in the second half."
"We've been playing well this year," continued Kerrigan. "We have just been unlucky in front of the net. A shot at the NCAA Tournament is definitely there for us if we continue to play well down the stretch."
NC State will host George Mason on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Method Road Soccer Stadium.
