Raleigh, N.C.--Kelly Blaggie (Clearwater, Florida) netted the game-winning goal to propel the NC State Wolfpack past the George Mason Patriots 3-2 in overtime at the Method Road Soccer Stadium on Sunday. The win gives the Wolfpack its fourth consecutive victory and lifts its record to 6-5 overall, while George Mason drops to 4-6-1.
Jennifer Orr put the Patriots on the board first with a header past Wolfpack goalkeeper Juliana Gomez (Miami Springs, Florida) at the 19:44 mark on a feed from Allison Cowan. Gomez started in place of junior Gretchen Lear (Sprinfield, Virginia), who broke her left pinky finger in practice on Thursday.
NC State leveled the match at 1 in the 54th minute when junior defender Erin Bushey (Biglerville, Pa.) headed in a cross from junior Jordan Allison (Greensboro, N.C.) to the upper right portion of the goal.
Freshman Lydia Bojcun (Hamilton Square, New Jersey) netted the first goal of her career in the 78th minute as she rifled a shot from 30 yards out that nestled just inside the left post for a 2-1 Wolfpack lead. Blaggie was credited with an assist on the play.
The lead would last barely a minute, however, as George Mason's Katy McGee converted a penalty kick after a Wolfpack foul to even the match at 2.
The action became fast and fuious in the final 25 minutes of the match as both teams traded shots and scoring opportunities became plentiful. The Wolfpack carried the ball deep into the Patriot end of the field in the 104th minute, forcing a foul. Blaggie took the free kick from 20 yards away and blasted a shot that glanced off the underside of the crossbar and into the net for the "golden goal".
George Mason goalkeeper Naomi Hines stopped 12 Wolfpack shots in the loss, while Gomez saved seven Patriot shots.
"It was such a hard fought victory for us," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "We had some fantastic finishing today, especially on Bojcun's goal in the second half. Also, Bushey really showed today why she is so strong in the air with her header today. All in all, though, I'm very proud of Kelly Blaggie. She went out and did exactly what you want your senior leader to do."
"I think that it was also very important for Juliana to get that first game under her belt," Kerrigan said. "It was a good first game for her."
The Wolfpack travels to Charlotte on Tuesday to take on the 49ers at 7:00 p.m.
