Charlotte, N.C.--Jordan Allison (Greensboro, North Carolina) scored in the 58th minute to lift the NC State women's soccer team over the Charlotte 49ers 1-0 Tuesday evening in Charlotte. The win pushes the Wolfpack's record to 7-5 overall, while Charlotte falls to 7-4-2 in 2001.
NC State outshot Charlotte in both halves during the contest, totaling 9 attempts for the match to six for the 49ers. The Wolfpack also garnered two corner kicks in the game, while shutting out Charlotte in that category.
The Wolfpack nearly dented the scoreboard in the first stanza when junior Adrienne Barnes (Clemmons, North Carolina) had her breakaway attempt thwarted by 49er goalkeeper Jenn Howell. Howell made three saves in the loss.
The game-winner came when sophomore Lindsey Underwood (Princess Anne, Maryland) collected a loose ball in the penalty box and fed it to Allison who placed the ball into the upper left corner of the net for the goal. Allison now has seven points for the season.
Charlotte, ranked seventh in the Southeast region, had a chance to net the equalizer late in the match, but Wolfpack freshman goalkeeper Juliana Gomez (Miami Springs, Florida) stopped a 20-yard attempt by the 49ers' Nicole Miller to seal the victory. Gomez also had three saves in registering the first shutout of her career.
"It was an ugly game," said NC State coach Laura Kerrigan. "It was very cold and windy out here, but we just fought through it. Juliana had a very nice save for us there at the end. I really thought that Underwood and our center midfielders played well because it was very physical out there. Overall, it was just a great team win for us."
NC State's five-game win streak is its longest since 1996 when the program enjoyed a six-match run.
The Wolfpack will now turn its attention to #13 Clemson (9-2, 3-2 ACC) as it faces the Tigers on the road Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
