Raleigh, N.C.-Junior Adrienne Barnes (Clemmons, North Carolina) scored two goals and sophomore Katherine Warman (Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada) notched a goal and an assist as NC State defeated the High Point Panthers 3-1 in the season opener for both squads.
The Wolfpack dominated the early action, keeping the ball in the Panther end of the field for most of the first half, tally 18 shots to just one for High Point.
Warman broke the scoreless tie at the 23:57 mark with a rocket from16 yards out to the upper right corner of the net on a feed from freshman Annika Schmidt (Welver, Germany).
Lydia Bojcun (Hamilton Square, New Jersey) nearly scored the Wolfpack's second goal when she rang a right-footed blast off the right post at the 42:25 mark of the first half. Barnes then tallied another goal for the Wolfpack 43:18 into the match when she booted in a Jordan Allison pass off a scramble in front of the net for a 2-0 Wolfpack advantage.
High Point would gain some momentum in the second half, culminating with a high-arching goal by Emily Lanham at the 79:06 mark to pull the Panthers within one.
Barnes put the game away with her second goal of the game at the 82:11 mark when she took a Warman feed and dribbled free of the Panther defense to deposit the shot into the left corner of the net for the final margin.
Barnes nearly had a hat trick in the game, as she took a free kick with just six seconds left from just inside the Panther box, but hit the crossbar
"We are definitely pleased to get the win," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "We created good pressure offensively and I liked to see that. We need to work on finishing, though. We had 29 shots and only scored three, but that will come with time. I think you will see us click better as the year goes on."
"I was very impressed with Adrienne's play off the bench for us," Kerrigan said. "She came in and took it right at the defense, which is what we want. Her goal really put them away after giving up one of our own."
