Eugene, Ore. - The N.C. State track season came to a close as three athletes - all runners in the 3,000 meter steeplechase - competed at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships here June 21-24.
Two-time ACC champion and all-American Chris Dugan reached the finals of the US championships for the first time and recorded an outstanding 11th place finish. Dugan's time of 8:40.83 was his best of the season. The race was won by Tom Chorny of Nike in 8:22.16.
Junior Katie Sabino capped her season with a stellar fifth place finish, running 10:05.47. That time was just 0.09 of a second slower than the all-time ACC record Sabino set three weeks earlier while finishing eighth in the NCAA championships, also held in Eugene. Sabino finishes the season having run the top four times in NC State and ACC history. Lisa Nye won the race, setting a new American record of 9:49.41.
N.C.State freshman Megan Coombs, who redshirted this track season, also qualified for the championships. Despite being knocked down in a collision with another runner on the first water jump, Coombs placed eighth in her qualifying heat with a time of 10:46.81. That time ranked her 23rd among the 37 competitors, but she did not advance to the final.
