Wolfpack Cross Country Notches Another Sweep At District III Championships

Greenville, S.C.-The N.C. State men's and women's cross country teams continued to roll through the postseason with a sweep of the District III Championships in Greenville, S.C. The NC State men placed all seven of their participants among the field's top 26 finishers, while the women defeated second-place North Carolina 45-49. The Wolfpack women held out two-time senior All-American Christy Nichols in preparation for the NCAA Championships on Monday, November 19th.
The sixth-ranked NC State men enjoyed just a 20-second split between their top five finishers in the 10-kilometer race. Senior Chris Seaton finished third overall in a time of 30:31, just a matter of feet ahead of senior All-American Chris Dugan, who took fourth-place in the same time. Junior Chad Pearson was fifth overall just one second back, while sophomore All-American Andy Smith was seventh in a time of 30:38. Ryan Woods rounded out the Wolfpack's scoring with an 11th-place finish with a mark of 30:51. The Wolfpack's final two runners, sophomore Devin Swann, (15th, 30:56) and David Patterson (26th, 31:25) also qualified for All-District III honors. Sophomore David Christian was also held out of competition with the national meet just nine days away.
The Wolfpack's 30 points topped William and Mary with 72, Wake Forest with 82, Duke with 86 and Virginia with 144.
The fourth-ranked women won a tight battle with North Carolina, spearheaded by having three finishers in the top seven spots in the 6-kilometer race. Sophomore Kristin Price was the top NC State finisher with a second-place performance (20:53). Junior Megan Coombs took fifth overall (21:24), while senior All-American Katie Sabino took seventh-place with a score of 21:39. Freshman Josianne Lauber finished 15th with a time of 21:59, Beth Fonner was 21st (22:21), Beth Kraft was 45th (22:50) and Janelle Vadnais was 54th overall in a mark of 23:09 to round out the field.
Just behind UNC in the team standings was Virginia (86), James Madison (121) and Duke (162).
"The men ran very well," said NC State head coach Rollie Geiger. "They all stayed together and ran very relaxed which is good because the real race is next weekend."
"Our women performed very nicely up at the front. Kristin Price and Josianne Lauber ran great races and I'm proud of the way they came out and performed this afternoon."
