Mt. Pleasant, SC (Sept. 1) - The NC State womens soccer team downed College of Charleston on the road Sept. 1 by the score of 4-0.
Wolfpack freshman goalkeeper Kristen Skinner got a shutout in her first collegiate appearance with a three-save performance. Skinner was forced into the lineup just before the game due to a shoulder separation by starting goalkeeper Gretchen Lear during warmups.
NC State sophomore forward Laura Scott scored two goals for the Wolfpack, including one at the 80:44 mark on an assist from sophomore midfielder Melissa Pressley. Pressley tallied a goal of her own at the 38:58 mark with assists from freshman forward Lindsey Underwood and sophomore midfielder Rachel Durr. Senior forward Shannon Tully also added a goal in the second half on assists from sophomore forward Amy Bary and Durr.
For the second consecutive game, the Wolfpack dominated the game, outshooting the Cougars 23-5. Underwood fired four shots on goal for the Wolfpack, while Tully, Scott and junior midfielder Kelly Blaggie each attempted three.
"We really possessed the ball well in the midfield again tonight," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "We had some trouble finishing at first but we began capitalizing in the second half. The great thing about tonight is that we did a great job of creating opportunities for ourselves and were able to find the back of the net during key situations in the game. Also, our ability to finish our opponent once we are able to control the action was really evident tonight."
NC State improved to 1-1 on the young season with the victory. The Wolfpack will next travel to South Carolina to take on the Gamecocks at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 3rd.
