Cross Country Teams Posts 2nd-Place Finish

Raleigh, NC (Sept. 24) - The nationally-ranked NC State cross country squads placed second at the Great American Cross Country Festival in Charlotte, NC on Sept. 23. The races were marred by heavy rain and flash-flooding that fell all night in the Charlotte area.
The eighth-ranked men placed second behind with 48 points behind seventh-ranked Georgetown with 38. 18th-ranked Michigan State took third with 62, Duke was fourth (72) and Virginia Tech (214) took fifth to round out the top five.
Redshirt sophomore David Patterson, the individual winner of the adidas Wolfpack Invitational last weekend, took fifth overall (24:23.7) to lead the Wolfpack. Freshman Andy Smith was ninth overall (24:36.5), followed by redshirt sophomore Dean Bowker (12th, 24:38.7), sophomore Chad Pearson (13th, 24:39.4) and redshirt freshman Nick Mangum (18th, 24:52.3) to round out the scoring for the Wolfpack. Other NC State finishers include: redshirt freshmen David Christian (25th, 25:04.3) and Devin Swann (28th, 25:10.1), redshirt juniors Scott Wirgau (49th, 25:44.2) and Ryan Woods (58th, 26:02.5) and redshirt senior Mike Fitzula (115th, 27:23.3).
The eighth-ranked NC State women also finished second with 57 points, behind sixth-ranked BYU (36 points). Fifth-ranked Georgetown was third (91 points), followed by 16-ranked Duke (104) and Michigan State (128).
Senior Lindsey Rogers led the way for the Wolfpack women, finishing eighth overall (17:23) followed by All-Americans Katie Sabino (9th, 17:23.7) and Christy Nichols (10th, 17:25.5). Junior Beth Fonner, winner of last weekends adidas Wolfpack Invitational, took 13th overall (17:30.1), followed by redshirt freshman Diana Henderson (21st, 17:49), the last NC State scorer. Also competing for the Wolfpack were freshman Erin Swain (28th, 17:58.1), redshirt sophomore Melinda Dubose (35th, 18:09.8), redshirt junior Beth Kraft (29th, 18:13.4) and redshirt freshman Yvonne Downing (61st, 18:50.7).
