East Carolina forward Kim Sandhoff, who took all three shots for the Pirates, scored the game-winner for the Pirates on a crossing pass from senior forward Charity McClure at the 89: 07 mark. The senior from Waipahu, Hawaii, blasted the left-foot shot past the diving NC State goalkeeper Gretchen Lear into the right corner of the net.
The Wolfpack dominated the game, spending most of the match on the East Carolina end of the field. NC State outshot the Pirates 17-3 during the match with freshman Katherine Warman leading the way for the Wolfpack with four shots on goal. Warman nearly scored in the first half on a header from a corner kick by sophomore Lauren Bendahan, but East Carolina defender Mandy Nixon got to the ball just before the ball got to the net. In the second half, NC State nearly scored again on a header by sophomore Erin Bushey, but the ball glanced off the right post.
"There were many positives that came of this game today," said Wolfpack head coach Laura Kerrigan. "I was really impressed with the way we controlled the middle of the field today. Carmen Israel, Kelly Blaggie and Lindsey Rosen did a great job for us there and that is encouraging because it will be an integral part of our success there this season."
"This loss could turn out to be a positive for us in the long run because we have to learn how to finish our opponents after we have dominated an entire game. We have to move forward from this."
The next Wolfpack game is on the road at College of Charleston at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 1st.
