Cross Country Squads Place Top Six at Notre Dame

South Bend, IN (Oct. 6) - NC State's nationally-ranked cross country teams both placed in the top six at The Notre Dame Invitational on Oct. 6. The eight-ranked men's squad recorded a fourth-place finish (162 pts) while the women's team, also ranked eighth in nation, placed sixth (186 pts) in the competitive event. Stanford swept the event, claiming both the men's and women's team titles.
Sophomore Chad Pearson led the men, finishing in 14th place with a time of 24:34. Dean Bowker, also a sophomore was the Wolfpack's next runner to cross the line and finish in 26th with a time of 24:46. Also competing for NC State were David Patterson (25:04, 42nd); Devin Swann (25:06, 43rd); Andy Smith 25:06, 44th) who crossed the finish line together. Other NC State finishers include Ryan Woods (25:17, 56th); David Christian (25:33, 75th); Scott Wirgau (25:58, 105th) and Michael Fitzula (26:53, 150th).
Katie Sabino and Beth Fonner led the Wolfpack Women, finishing in sixth and seventh place respectively with times of 17:24 and 17:28. Also completing the race for NC State was Diana Henderson (18:11, 43rd); Melinda Dubose (18:25, 63rd); Beth Kraft (18:29, 71st); Erin Swain (18:37, 81st); Vonnie Downing (18:51, 110th); Amy Beykirch (19:01, 131st); and Molly Purser (19:21, 163rd).
Luke Waston of Notre Dame won the men's individual title with a time of 23:56. Duke's Sheela Agrawal won the women's race with a time of 17:05.
Coach Rollie Geiger's harriers will next compete on Oct. 14 at the North Carolina Collegiate Championships in Charlotte, N.C.
