Raleigh, NC (Oct. 3) - NC State sophomore forward Laura Scott's 30-yard shot over the outstretched arms of Elon goalkeeper Sommer Cork dented the back of the net as the horn sounded to push the Wolfpack past the Phoenix 1-0 Oct. 3 at Method Road Soccer Stadium. It was Scotts team-high sixth goal of the season, catapulting NC State to 8-4-1 overall (1-1 ACC), the programs best start since 1996 when it was also 8-4-1 through 13 games.
The Wolfpack, ranked eighth in the Southeast by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, held the advantage in the midfield throughout most of the game, outshooting Elon 17-1. NC State freshman forward Lindsey Underwood fired five shots on goal for the Wolfpack, while sophomore midfielder Lindsey Rosen took three.
NC State also registered 13 corner kicks to only one for the Phoenix (3-9). The Wolfpack nearly scored twice in the second half on shots by freshman forward Katherine Warman and Underwood, but were thwarted both times on backsaves by Elon's M.K. Davis and Erin Lautermilch.
Wolfpack goalkeeper Gretchen Lear secured her third consecutive shutout in the win. Lear has allowed only one goal in 360 minutes of play this season. Cork made five saves for Elon in the loss.
"That was an unbelievable finish," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "Laura Scott just made an incredible play for us at the end. I dont think I've ever seen anything like that. We wanted to try and win this game early, but Elon made it tough for us. They forced us to make an unbelievable shot to win, but that is fine. Good teams will find a way to win."
NC State, winners of six of their last seven contests, will face fourth-ranked North Carolina (12-1) Wednesday, October 11 at 7:00 p.m. at the WRAL CASL Soccer Complex. UNC's only loss this season came against second-ranked Clemson on September 13th.
