Raleigh, NC (Oct. 11) - The third-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels used two first-half goals to jump out to an early lead against NC State on its way to a 3-0 defeat of the Wolfpack on Oct. 11. With the win, North Carolina improves to 12-1 on the season (3-1 ACC), while NC State falls to 8-5-1 (1-2 ACC).
North Carolina began the scoring at the 9:07 mark of the first half with a goal by freshman forward Alyssa Ramsey on a free kick that sailed just over the outstretched arm of Wolfpack goalkeeper Gretchen Lear. The second UNC goal came at the 37:42 mark of the first half by senior forward Meredith Florance on a neatly-placed shot into the top of the net. Coming into the game, Florance was tied with Tammy Waine of Auburn for the national lead in points per game with a 2.92 average. North Carolina's final tally came in the second half at the 70:44 mark when senior midfielder Laurie Schwoy headed in a pass from senior midfielder Kalli Kamholz.
NC State's attack on UNC goalkeeper Kristin Deplatchett was evident mostly in the second half when the Wolfpack took all of its four shots. In the first half, NC State's offense was stymied throughout most of the action when it was called for 13 of its 17 fouls. North Carolina committed nine total fouls, with five coming in the first half of play.
"We got opportunities against them tonight," said head coach Laura Kerrigan. "We played really strong tonight, especially in the second half. We feel good about our defensive effort in the first half, because even with the goals, we limited their attack to five shots. Gretchen played excellent tonight making some great saves."
"Tonight, we really showed that we can play at this level. North Carolina beat both #9 Duke and #14 Virginia 6-1, so we can really hold our heads high." The Wolfpack, ranked eighth in the Southeast, is back in action on Oct. 14 at 2:00 p.m. when it hosts the 19th-ranked Florida State Seminoles at Method Road Soccer Stadium.
