Cross Country Teams Advance at District III Championships

NC State's men placed five members on the All-District team, including two-time senior All-American Chan Pons, who finished second overall in a time of 29:49. Four-time senior All-ACC performer Corby Pons was close behind, finishing third in 29:57. Junior All-American Chris Dugan was ninth (30:10), senior three-time All-ACC standout Abdul Alzindani took tenth (30:17), and junior All-ACC honoree Mike Fitzula was 16th (30:49). NC State also received fine performances from freshmen Dean Bowker (28th, 31:09) and Brad Einboden (66th, 32:08). The Wolfpack ran, once again, without two-time senior All-American Brendan Rodgers, who has been sidelined due to injury. He is expected to return to action for the NCAA meet, however.
In team standings, NC State took first with a score of 40 points, just ahead of William & Mary with 69. James Madison was third (84 points), followed by Duke (142) and Wake Forest (180) to round out the top five.
The women, led by junior All-American Christy Nichols (3rd, 17:17), finished second (79 points) behind a very strong North Carolina team (66 points). These two squads also finished 1-2 at the ACC Championships on November 1st. UNC and NC State finished just ahead of Duke (123 points), James Madison (148), and Wake Forest (162).
Sophomore Katie Sabino took 11th in a time of (17:40), junior Amy Beykirch was 16th (17:51), sophomore Beth Fonner posted a very impressive 24th (18:08), and redshirt sophomore Molly Purser was 28th (18:15) to round out the scoring. Other finishers for NC State included freshman Megan Coombs (46th, 18:35) and sophomore Beth Kraft (55th, 18:47).
