Women’s Golf Finishes Second at NB3 Matchplay

SANTA ANA PUEBLO, N.M. – The NC State women's golf team finished in second at the NB3 Matchplay at the Twin Warriors Golf Course this week. Fighting weather and remnants of Hurricane Polo, the team fought against tough playing conditions through 54 holes.
NC State did not drop a match as a team, defeating New Mexico State, 4-1, and New Mexico, 3-2, and tying with Oklahoma, 2.5-2.5. Oklahoma won the tournament with 10.5 points, while NC State followed with 9.5. New Mexico finished in third (5.5) and New Mexico State in fourth (4.5).
Freshman Bonnie Lo went a perfect 3-0 in the tournament and all five Wolfpack players won at least one match over the week.
Match #1 vs. New Mexico State - Wolfpack wins, 4-1
NC State scored the first point in the match courtesy of Ellie Hildreth, who defeated Carina Stauffer, 4&3. Hildreth lost her first hole before getting on a roll to win holes five, seven and eight. She remained steady without giving up a hole, and sealed the deal early on hole 15 after Stauffer bogeyed.
Lindsay McGrath dominated in her first match, winning 7&6, not losing a single hole and was 4UP at the turn. She then won three straight holes on 10, 11 and 12. Giulia Foresta dropped her match to Sophia Luna, 6&4. Luna went 2UP at hole 5 and Foresta won the seventh hole to bring the match within one, but could not close in further.
Lo got off to a stellar start vs. Rylee Salome, which set the tone for her 3&2 win. Salome won the 13th hole to cut the lead to two, but Lo was able to finish the match early with a birdie on 16. Lo's win clinched the match for the Wolfpack over the Aggies. Marie Eline Madsen then brought things home in a hard-fought match with a 2&1 win over Camille Pazouki. Madsen trailed by one early after the third hole and after three ties, Madsen won the 15th and 17th holes to clinch the 4-1 win.

Match #2 vs. New Mexico - Wolfpack wins, 3-2
NC State started out its match against New Mexico Tuesday afternoon before finishing it on Wednesday morning. Madsen picked up her second win of the tournament with a 2&1 victory over Ausanee Udkamtiang. She was 3UP with six to play and after a push by Udkamtiang to cut the lead to one with four holes left, Madsen won hole four and tied the next two to clinch her match. Lo took care of business in her second match with a 3&2 win over Juliette Hole. Lo went up by four after seven holes and Hole fought back to come within one at hole two. The freshman responded by winning holes three and five.
McGrath dropped her match vs. Ciara Rushmer. The match was tied going into Wednesday, but Rushmer won three straight holes for the win. Foresta won her first collegiate match play event with a 2&1 win. In a match that went back and forth, Foresta closed out strong by winning holes 17, three and four. Hildreth put up a fight in her match against Ava Cepeda, who won 1UP. Hildreth was down by as many as two, and after winning holes 18 and three, the sophomore sent the match to 18 holes, but Cepeda delivered a birdie for the win. After Foresta's point, NC State clinched the match vs. the Lobos, 3-2.

Match #3 vs. Oklahoma - Wolfpack ties, 2.5-2.5
NC State came into the final match down one point to Oklahoma, needing to win four matches to force a playoff. Lo closed out a perfect 3-0 week, beating Meg Tilma, 6&5. She won seven holes and lost just one hole in the match. McGrath dropped her match against Satonkam Thiengsri, 2&1. McGrath was able to keep the match going with a win at hole 16, but was unable to keep the match going at 17.
Foresta was down one in her match to Nancy Cox after she made an eagle at 16, but she responded with two wins on 17 and 18 to come back with the 1UP win. Madsen clawed back in her match vs. Anna Kate Nichols after being down by as many as four and won holes 15 and 16, but it was a little too late to force a tie. Hildreth went up early by two on Audrey Rischer who tied the match at hole 16. Hildreth responded back with a huge birdie putt on 17 to go back up one, but a tough tee shot on 18 led to a tie in the match.
