RALEIGH – NC State women's basketball team's Zoe Brooks has been tabbed to the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year Midseason Watchlist, as announced by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Monday. Brooks is one of 10 in the country on this list that recognizes the best point guard in women's college basketball.
Brooks is stuffing the statsheet in her junior season with career-high clips of 16.3 points per game, 5.1 rebounds per game and a team-leading 4.8 assists per game, along with 1.2 steals per game. She is shooting 42.0 percent from the field (111-270) and 82.2 from the free throw line (118-281) and has a team's best 2.0 assist/turnover ratio.
The point guard has 18 double-digit scoring games, five 20-point games, one 30-point game, three double-digit rebounding games and two double-doubles this season. She surpassed 1,000 career points against Davidson in December, becoming the 41st member of the 1K club at NC State. With 1,167 points, she is now No. 32 on the all-time scoring list.
Brooks was named the USBWA National Player of the Week and ACC Player of the Week following a 37-point performance at Virginia. Those 37 points marked the most scored by a member of the Pack since 1998 and the ninth most in school history. She also added five rebounds and five assists in that overtime win.
In the ACC, Brooks ranks fifth in scoring, free throw percentage and assist/turnover ratio, sixth in assists per game and minutes per game (33.2) and 15th in field goal percentage.
To be considered for the Nancy Lieberman Award, candidates must exhibit the floor leadership, playmaking and ball-handling skills of Nancy Lieberman, a 1996 Hall of Famer. The award is in its 27th year.
Brooks is one of two ACC point guards on the watchlist with Notre Dame's Hannah Hidalgo being the other. The list will remain fluid as the season progresses to give players the opportunity to move on and off the list until the final five are selected. This list will be trimmed down to the final five, as announced in March. The award winner and presentation details will be announced at the Final Four. Fans will have the opportunity to vote.
NC State hosts North Carolina tonight, Monday, Feb. 2, at 6 p.m. for the 21st annual Play4Kay game. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2 and will also air the halftime cancer survivor ceremony.
