Pack Falls to UCF on Final Day of Shriners Children’s Clearwater Invitational

CLEARWATER, Fla. – After a long battle with UCF, the NC State softball team fell 6-2 in its final game of the of the Shriners Children's Clearwater Invitational hosted by ESPN Events.

How it Went Down

Rylee Wyman earned the start in the circle and struck out the first batter faced.
The Knights posted two on the board after the second batter in the lineup was hit by pitch and Kendall Yarnell smashes a ball past the outfield fence.
The Wolfpack struggled offensively as it was unable to get a hit on the board until the bottom of the third when freshman catcher Carmen Montes de Oca hit a single to left center field.
Wyman went four complete innings with five strikeouts. Redshirt junior Wynne Gore entered in relief with two on, no outs and the Knights held a 3-0 lead.
The Wolfpack responded in the bottom half of the fifth after senior Maia Townsend singled, and Carly Short reached on an error to bring home junior Sarah Johnson who reached on a fielder's choice.
The Pack entered the sixth inning trailing by two (1-3), but the Knights quickly posted two more runs after two errors by the Pack and a single from Coco James brought runners home.
The Knights plated their final run in the top of the seventh after Izzy Mertes hit a sac fly to bring home Zoe Calvez.
Townsend attempted to start a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh with a single through the left side that was followed up by a double from freshman Carly Short.
Sophomore Kendall Simmers would then reach on an error by the Knights third baseman, allowing Townsend to touch the plate. UCF picked up the final out by catching the final Wolfpack batter swinging.
The loss moves NC State to 3-7 on the season and 1-4 at the Clearwater Invitational.
